Childhood Obesity Is A National Epidemic - 1406 Words

Childhood obesity is a national epidemic. Nearly 1 in 3 children (ages 2-19) in the United States is overweight or obese, putting them at risk for serious health problems. Studies show that overweight kids are likely to become overweight and obese adults. This is a significant issue in the U.S. and needs to be monitored closely. Some parents are in denial that their children are obese and do not do anything to help or prevent it. When obesity is a problem at a young age it is very easy to have, it become a habit all throughout their life. My brother is 8 years-old and entering the third-grade next year. This did not come to a shock because when talking about obesity even for an adult the ultimate treatment comes down to a better diet, self-care, and if it really can’t be kept under control you can get a physician involved. Strategic Plan Non Governmental Organization

Question: Discuss about the Strategic Plan for Non Governmental Organization. Answer: Introduction This report describes the strategic plan for an organization which is focused on child rights and welfare of children. People basically live in a world having no boundaries. There are some responsibilities of every person towards the society and community. There are some issues in the society of every country. Those are issues of class and ethnicity, inequality, geography and many other issues. In all the issues, there is one more issue i.e. children rights. Child and their right protection must be a priority for the society. This report provides the strategic plan for a new nongovernmental organization which is working in the United Arab Emirates. The report proposes the concept of new organization which will protect the rights of children in the society (Courtney, 2002). Children are basically experience neglect, violence, abuse, and exploitation in most of the areas in the society. There are millions of children who are affected and even more are at risk. So, child and their rights protection must be the key priority for the society and its people. The proposed organization will work as the child protector in the community of Dubai. The organization will focus in the partnership with the other organizations and government, child-led initiatives, and people to stop the violence against children. It is important for the children to protect them from abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation so that they can enjoy their rights to development, participants and survival in the society. There are many children who drop out of school due to safety and protection issues. Failure in protecting children rights has negative impact on the children that continue in their adult life. It is essential to save their rights for making them future citizens of the coun try. The name of nongovernmental organization will be Smile Foundation which will spread happiness on the faces of children (Ritchie Weinberg, 2000). Situation faced by organization It is stated that the organization is going to start work in the United Arab Emirates. Before starting, it is important t for the organization to analyze the problems related to the children in the country. The children face discrimination in the country. Non-citizen children in the country have limited access to the basic rights. There is the issue of education and child trafficking and force labor is the main and big issue in the country. Children are used to be kidnapped and sold at the age of 4 or 5 years. Further, there is the issue of child abuse. Child marriage is still widespread in the UAE. According to one report of UNICEF, it is estimated that around 55% of women younger than 20 years are already married in the country. So, the priority areas for organization are: Physical and humiliating punishment, Children and work, Children protection in emergencies, and Children without appropriate care (UNICEF, 2014). Each and Every child deserves a life without neglect, violence, abuse and exploitation. This can be happen when a child grows up in the safe family. Abuse and valance are the serious issues that occur in all parts of the world. Violence against children includes unsafe migration, child trafficking, child abusive images, and climate related disasters. So, the organization will define the appropriate strategies to save the rights of the children. These are the issues by which the organization has to deal in the country (Lewis, 2007). Publics and target people The organization wants to reach out as many helpless children and orphans as much as possible. The organization will mainly focus on the rights and well-being of the children in the United Arab Emirates. The children who have the age of zero to 18 will be targeted by the organization. In the country, most of the children have age of 12 and above of this age, children are to be considered as young people rather than children. So, organization will focus on the rights and well-being of children and young people. Along with this, the member of the organization will work with young people over 18 as they need particular care such as children having disabilities. The organization will advocate for more integrated child and youth policies to make sure for smooth move into maturity (Andreasen Kotler, 2003). Goals and objectives Organization understands the right of education for children. Organization believes in the education for the full development of the children in terms of personality, talent, sense of dignity and capacity. For this, the organization will promote education inclusive education to minimize the discrimination and allow each boy and girl to get basic education. This education will be child-centered and will be based on motivation, characteristics, dream, experience and realities of children. This goal has further three objectives: Right to education- The aim is creating important and necessary conditions to provide basic education to all the children in the country without any kind of differentiation by the organization. Right in education- The aim of organization is to implement the relevant, important and creative learning and teaching process which will be student centered to help the children in developing their talent, personality and capacities for the future. Right through education- Organization has aim to promote critical, inclusive and participatory education to the children in Dubai which will respect to human rights and will teach to engage with the society. As the organization is working for the children, the goal of the organization is to protect them from any violation. Organization understands the right to protection so; organization will try to provide healthy environment to the children that will be free of any kind of discrimination, exploitation, and degrading punishment. Further objectives under this goal are: Promote the family and society environment for children which will be free of violence, negligence, abuse and mistreatment, Reduction of child labor and abolition which are the cause of child exploitation by increasing the number of children for the education system, and Protection of children in the country from the natural disasters by providing them community residences and resilience (Muturia Oeba, 2012). There is the need of good governance which will involve active and efficient participation of children. There is the requirement of the process which will provide the effective governance to the children in the country to promote their rights. The objectives under this are: Organization will fulfill its duties by establishing the effective structure, laws and policies which will focus on child rights. For this, organization will work with the local government to develop the child right strategies, The aim is to ensure effective role of community and civil society to build and monitor the strategies to promote and defend the child rights, and Children are right holder for organization will participate actively in the society to express their ideas and viewpoints, and will claim their rights related to them. Actions and strategies After setting the goals and objectives, it is the time to implement the strategies and actions to save the child rights. First goal of the organization is to provide education to the children. To achieve this goal: Organization will identify the main cause for children who are not getting the opportunities of the education system i.e. health, family, community or poverty etc. Organization will provide safe, healthy and proactive educational environment to the children, and Will cooperate and partnership with the various schools in UAE. For achieving second goal i.e. protection, the strategies of organization will: Promoting birth registration system and fighting against the negligence for the survival of the children, Fighting against the worst form of child labor, and Developing and implementing the disaster risk-management plan to fulfill the specific needs of children (Kameri-Mbote, 2008). For achieving third goal i.e. governance, the strategies and actions will be: Supporting the designs of all local and national strategies which have the agenda of child development, Collaborating with teachers, parents and society as the active agent to change their attitude towards children rights and Supporting the effective participation of children in decision making with the places and communities (Bennett Sargeant, 2005). The aim of the Smile Foundation is that the child rights for every child must be protected. The organization will strengthen the community based child protection system and will work with the other partners i.e. government and other social actors in community. The slogan for the organization will match its aim. The slogan will be Rights for children, Rights for future. Mission and vision The mission of the organization will be to improve the lives of children by the better realization of their human rights in society. For this part, organization will work to ensure that children in Dubai freely enjoy their rights and live their life in which they will free from discrimination, their best interest will always be taken into account, and they will get opportunities to maximize and improve their development etc. The vision of the organization will be for all the children to understand their rights in Dubai. The aim of organization is to provide the experience to the children about their rights in every day of their lives. To create awareness among the community of the country regarding children rights and to provide effective education to the children, organization will use the various public relations tools in the strategic plans (Basil, 2011). Those public relations tools are: Online media will be used to create awareness about the child issues in the society. In present time, online and social media is the most effective tool to make the people aware about any issue. In the online media, social medial tools will be used by the organization. social media tools will include YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter which will be used to send the message regarding child issues and their protections. Social media will be effective to make the people creative and aware (Macedo Pinho, 2006). Direct mailing is the part of online media which will also be used by the organization. The messages and mails related to child education, child protection, care and child trafficking will be send so that the people in the society will know this face of human beings. This will be two ways communication method by which people will be able to share their viewpoints and thoughts for protecting the child rights (Liao, Foreman Sargeant, 2001). News and magazines Due to various newspapers and magazines organization will be able to show the real life of needed children and their conditions in the society. Organization can show this by pictures and images and ask the people for help the needed people. Although, this is the traditional method but it is considered as the most effective communication method. This method is expensive but still it will be used to show the issues of the child by various short films and news. This communication tool will be helpful for the organization to reach the people and make them aware for their bright society (Williamson, 2009). Conclusion Children are the important contribution of the society. By focusing on the child issues in Dubai, there is the need of effective nongovernmental organization in the country which will work for the child rights and protections. From the above analysis, it has observed that if the Smile Foundation will work properly with the proposed strategic plan then the society will be free from the serious child issues. The goals and objectives are the organizations are clear i.e. education, protection and governance. By these objectives, organization will be able to make the discrimination free environment for the children of the country. It is not only important to create strategic plan but also important to evaluate and monitor it time to time. The organization will monitor the plan by forming a review committee and the evaluation will be done on three times i.e. initial evaluation, mid-term evaluation and final evaluation for the effective strategic plan to protect the childs rights. Living in a Big City free essay sample

Living in a big city Some people prefer living in a small town while others prefer living in a large city. I think there are far more advantages living in a large city then there is in living in a small town. Some example would be more options in transportation, more entertainment, and more job opportunities. Firstly, the stronger point of big city that small town lacks in is the public  transportation. Most of small towns do not give a lot of access to various  vehicles. On the other hand, it is widely known that big city often offers more  choices of public transportation than the small town. For example, big cities such as Vancouver, the subway run twenty-four hours for seven  days a week and also there are numerous numbers of taxi and bus which spread to  every area. As a result, people can go everywhere they want easily with public  transportation. We will write a custom essay sample on Living in a Big City or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This is very help for elders who no longer can drive and need another form of transportation to get around. In addition to public transportation, access to greater entertainment facility is   another positive aspect of living in a big city. There is entertainment on every corner you go! From fancy restaurants having live bands, to night clubs, and watching live sports, you would always find something new and entertaining and you will never be bored! For example in a small town like St. Thomas you will never see a live concert or any famous people around because they usually go to the bigger cities were there’s a bigger audience. The same goes to the live sports usually big finals or exiting games happen in bigger cities like Toronto where there is more fans to cheer them on. Also in any given day that you want to hang out with your friend there’s always endless fun things you can do in a big city like going to one of the best night club available or a fancy restaurant. This shows clearly  that the entertainment facility in the big city provides more convenience and  self-indulgence to people that they cannot get if they live in small town. Finally, the last reason that best explains the advantages of life in a big city is the job opportunities. Due to the large number of people live in big city,  there are more professions, job positions and companies which are available for  young people especially the ones who specialise in specific subjects. In contrast  with small town that has fewer people, job positions and professions are limited  because big companies do not usually establish their headquarters there. For  example, in fashion career, big city such as Toronto has higher rate of fifty percents in job employment than small town like St. Thomas. Also if you want a career as a famous singer/ actor or be successful at a sport in a professional level a small towns would not get you as far as living in a big city because all the influence and sponsors who help get far are located in bigger area where most of the population is. Therefore, it is  absolutely better for people to live in a big city as it is the ultimate chance  to search for desired job that relates to their knowledge. In conclusion there are three main reasons which show why life in a big city is   better by considering from brilliant public transportation, entertainment  attractions and job opportunities that are rarely found in most small towns. If  there is no change in the development of these aspects in small town, more and  more people will certainly leave their home town in order to gain more access of  these features in the big city.

Abortion Pro and Cons essays

Abortion Pro and Cons essays One of the most important issues in the world is the controversy surrounding abortion. Do you think abortion is right? Many people have been asking themselves this same question for years now. Abortion has been a heated argument amongst citizens, political activists, and religions all across the world. Those who are against abortion (pro-life), argue that abortion is wrong because it kills human life. On the other hand we have people who favor abortion (pro-choice). They believe women are able to do as they wish with their bodies. About forty percent of Americans believe that abortion should be legal. Forty percent believe abortion should be banned except when the pregnancy threatens the life of the mother or is the result of a rape (Cozic, Petriken 97). Although abortion is considered to be a women right, it should be illegal because it is murder, has many side effects, and there are other alternatives. The main argument of pro-life is that abortion is wrong because you are kill ing a human being. As soon as that egg is fertilized a human child begins to develop. If a woman chooses to have sex, she is choosing to accept responsibility for the consequences that come in the future. A woman does have the right to her own body. What we do not see is that the child also has the right to his or her own body. If we think of the situation everybody has social, economic and personal problems, but we do not go around killing people because they are standing in our way. Then why should we kill a defenseless child inside us? Being a woman myself I believe I would not be able to live with the guilt knowing I killed a human being, which had the right to live and grow up the same way I did. 1 Many people ask themselves the same question, is a fetus really a human life? Of course it is a human life. We all begin as fetuses and ended up being born. We all have to thank god for being b...

Dawn Kills Animals

Dawn Kills Animals Proctor and Gamble tests on animals, they dont want to stop, but they want the public to think they are animal-friendly. Last night, I saw a very disturbing commercial for Dawn dishwashing liquid. The commercial claims that thousands of animals caught in oil spills have been saved by being washed in their dishwashing liquid. The video depicts a penguin, a duckling and an otter, all covered with oil, being bathed with their dishwashing liquid. In the before video, you can see how the duckling stumbles and struggles to walk. In tiny letters at the bottom of the screen, it says, simulated demonstration. This was not footage of an actual rescue. They intentionally covered at least three animals with tempera paint and corn syrup to simulate oil, just so they could wash them on camera. If Dawn really is used to wash oil off of animals, why couldnt they use footage of an actual rescue? The company then has the audacity to put up a website at DawnSavesWildlife.com, extolling their role in wildilfe rescue. Meanwhile, Proctor and Gamble, the parent corporation that owns Dawn, continues to test on animals and defends animal testing: We must conduct research involving animals to ensure materials are safe and effective. Not to be branded monsters, they have joined with The Humane Society of the United States in a partnership committed to the elimination of animal use for consumer product safety evaluation. Im guessing that this guarantees that HSUS will not target PG in any campaigns. PG, if you were really committed to the elimination of animal testing, you would stop it. Today. Now. Stop the lip service. Stop pretending. What you can do: Boycott Proctor Gamble products. Contact Proctor Gamble at 513-983-1100 or via email at comments.impg.com (Update: It appears that PG has now disabled this email address), to tell them you are boycotting all of their products until they stop testing on animals. Its not always easy to tell which brands are owned by PG and the list is always changing, so try to familiarize yourself with this list, from the official PG website. Dozens of brands are part of the PG corporation, including Dawn, Gillette, Cover Girl, Pampers, Tampax, Clairol, Febreeze, Tide, Mr. Clean, Crest and others. Iams and Eukanuba are also owned by PG and sponsor the Iditarod, so there are at least two reasons to boycott these two brands. Even better, boycott all companies that test on animals. Two apps available on iTunes make it easy to carry around a list of companies that dont test on animals. Cruelty-Free and BNB (short for Be Nice to Bunnies) are both compatible with the iPhone or the iPod touch. July 21, 2009 Update: I just spoke to Cory, a representative at PG, and told him that Im not swayed by the Dawn Saves Wildlife campaign, and if PG really cared about animals, they would stop animal testing. Cory was very nice and said that he would pass along my comment. He also said that PG is required by law to conduct animal testing. I told him that was not true. Federal law requires drugs to be tested on animals, but no law requires household products to be tested on animals. Cory said that the EPA requires new chemicals to be tested on animals. But thats not the same as requiring all household products to be tested on animals. A dishwashing liquid can be made using known, reliable ingredients, without creating new chemicals. There are lots of cruelty-free companies making the same types of cleaning products that PG makes, without animal testing. Our very civil conversation ended with my accepting Corys offer to send me a pamphlet about PGs animal testing, but turning down his of fer of coupons for PG products. Regardless of the certification from AHA, the animal rights position is that animals should not be used for entertainment or commercials, and should not be covered with paint or corn syrup. Correction, July 22, 2009: The original postincorrectly stated that during the filming of the commercial live animals were covered with oil. However, according to American Humane Association, the animals were covered with a mixture of tempera paint and corn syrup designed to simulate oil. The original post also suggested that animals may have been injured or killed during the filming of the commercial. American Humane Association was on set to supervise the filming of the commercial and certified that No animals were harmed during the taping.

Carbohydrates Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Carbohydrates - Research Paper Example Polysaccharides function to store energy; in plants they operate as cellulose. A monosaccharide know as ribose is essential to coenzymes and also is one of the predominant structural elements in the genetic material that composes RNA. Informal contexts within nutrition research that reference carbohydrates often refer to their existence in foods such as pastas, bread, and cereals and often correlate their occurrences to foods that contain large amounts of starch. When examining carbohydrates in terms of food science, they are divided into simple and complex carbohydrates. Dietary guidelines recommend that complex carbohydrates should be coupled with simple carbohydrates that contain a significant amount of nutrients – this includes fruits, such as apples and oranges. It is also recommended that individuals gain approximately 45-60% of their energy from carbohydrates food sources; only 10% of these sources should be derived from simple carbohydrates, that is sugars. While carbo hydrates are recommended for healthy living they are not termed essential nutrients. Indeed, it is possible for living organisms to obtain all the necessary nutritive elements for life from solely fats and proteins. Not all carbohydrates are readily digestible by humans, as some carbohydrates can only be digested with the aid of gut

The Operations of the Stella-Jones Inc Research Paper

The Operations of the Stella-Jones Inc - Research Paper Example Due to its expansive network of operations, Stella-Jones operates about 27 plants for treating wood, which are spread across 15 states in the United States while the remaining ones are situates across five Canadian provinces (Nicolas). This paper therefore, explores the operations strategy of Stella-Jones Inc. as a Canadian company that is on an expansion path despite numerous logistical and technical setbacks. Although there are many wood treatment plants and companies in Canada, one of them, which is Stella-Jones Inc., stands out due to its unique operations and management strategies. Indeed, the company has developed and maintained a good rapport with its major customers over the years and this has really ensured security of supply by the company (Nicolas). In addition, the company has managed to stay afloat because it manufactures a wide range of products including railway ties and utility poles. Since the poles so manufactured by the company are considerably durable due to the due to the pressure treatment, they have always found uses in various areas ranging from domestic to industrial uses (Rochon 2012). Perhaps it is crucial at this point to the fact that Stella-Jones Inc. has for many years adopted a ‘boring’ operation strategy, which surprisingly, have paid off dividends. This is rightly so in the sense that it has produced not so ‘decent’ products but in real sense, their products are essential to both national and regional development (Rochon 2012). Although many people do not appreciate the significance of wood poles, railway ties, and timbers, it is worthy to note that telecommunications companies and electrical utility highly regard these products. This authentically means that Stella-Jones Inc. rips a decent profit off such companies through the provision of such essential products. More specifically, the company’s operation in pressure

Reason of brand image transfer between industries Dissertation

Reason of brand image transfer between industries - Dissertation Example The question which is raised is then based on why corporations decide to transfer brands between industries. The strategic implications and the associations with how this relates to the environment becomes the most important aspect while creating a deeper understanding of what the expected results are within the brand image. The ability to develop more insight into brand image transfer is then able to create questions of how corporations can use this for better results when associating with the external environment. ... ?†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦25 Methodology†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦..26 Type of Study†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦.27 Ethical Considerations†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦...30 Summary†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦30 Results†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦31 Discussion†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦..36 Recommendations for Brand Image Transfer†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦40 Limitations of the Study†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦.41 Implications for Future Research†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦...43 Conclusion†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦.45 References†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦..47 Introduction The power of a brand is one which is often recognized as a driving force among businesses that are searching for solutions. The role of the brand becomes even more essential to examine when looking at the transfer between industries and with alternative products and services. The effects which this holds are able to alter both the internal and external environment while creating changes within the industry. Creating effective strategies for brand identity is one which can begin to alter the way in which individuals respond to given situations while creating a different relationship with the strategies that are created with corporations. Scottish Architecture Building

Scottish Architecture Building The Scottish Parliament Building- A report into Project Failure Introduction Sitting within the UNESCO World Heritage site, the new home to the Scottish Parliament in Holyrood from its outset has proven to be controversial. Opening in 2004, politicians, the media and the Scottish public have criticised many aspects of the build. Aside from cost controversy surrounded the decision to construct a new building, the choice of site, the selection of a non-Scottish architect and the selection of Bovis as a construction Manager after being earlier excluded from the shortlist. In amongst its criticisms the building has seven awards, including the 2005 Stirling prize, the Vill Biennial of Spanish Architecture and the RIAS Andrew Doolan award for architecture, and after being shortlisted for the Stirling prize in 2004 was described by judges as a ‘statement of sparkling excellence. The building finally opened in 2004, three years after its scheduled opening with a final estimated cost of  £414 million, exceeding the originally estimate of between  £10m - £40m. In 2003 the former Lord Peter Fraser chaired a major public inquiry into ‘the cost over-run and delays in the construction of the Scottish parliament building finally concluding in September 2004, criticising the management of the project. Lord Fraser said his inquiry had been hampered by the unwillingness of those involved in the project to take responsibility for what went wrong. The ancient walls of the Canongate have echoed only to the cry of, it wisnae me, he said. He concluded that there is no single villain of the piece behind the Holyrood building fiasco. This report looks at the fundementals of what went wrong and to what extent project management could be held responsible. Strategic and Operationall project management actions that could have been taken to better control the project and increase its chance for successful delivery against time and cost targets are discussed. The report finally concludes by indentifying the key lessons that project management can learn from the experience. I do not wish to pass comment on the subjective viewpoint of the aesthetics of the building yet rather seek to analysis the reasons to explain the delay and cost over run of the project. This report has been broken down into the following sections. Delays and Cost The role of the Project Management Strategic and Operations Management Conclusion Delays and Cost There are many factors that attributed to the cost and delay of the building which when added together led to disastrous consequences: Primary Coast and Brief The primary cost projection by the Scottish office for housing MPSs in a new Scottish parliament were never achievable from the outset. The estimate took no account of either location or design of its buildings. Lord Frasier concludes that the figure of  £40 million which appeared in the white paper was informed by a range of costs put forward in a minute of 10th June 1997 which was based upon very general assumptions and for a ‘bog standard and new building.  £40 million was never a realistic estimate to cover anything other than a basic build, certainly not a complex building such as the building which was finally procured when considered it was based upon a cleared site of 16,000sqm on Brownfield land in either Leith or Holyrood, a basic design and was unclear if this sum included professional or construction fees. Consequently as the project progressed and the design of Enric Miralles was chosen, the cost projection increased dramatically, being revised to include VAT, acquisition costs, contingencies, site costs, and consultancy fees. Over the course of the five year build it is reported that 18,000 design changes occurred resulting in a three year delay. There was clearly an inadequacy of the brief and a failure to adequately investigate the size requirements of such a building, with the gross area of the building having to be increased by 35%. The increase of security features such as the incorporation of bomb-proof cladding in October 2002, may have amounted to as much as nearly  £100 million. Security requirements envisaged for the new parliament building were contained in the building user brief of 1998, however rather than designing to a security specification, the ‘nature of the concept meant that a realistic assessment of the detailed security requirements could not be undertaken until the detailed design of the building had commenced. This would have the greatest impact in regards to cost and programme on the project. Architect Selection In July 1997, it was announced that a competition would be held to select ‘the best design for a new Scottish parliament, with the press release stating ‘we want value for money as well as quality. We will be looking at ways in which the cost of the parliament can be kept to a minimum. The time frame was set with a designer to be in place by early 1998 and for the building to be complete for the new Millennium. As such, it seems the Scottish parliament was unable to decide where there priorities lay with respect to quality, cost and time. The panel selected designer Enric Miralles with the work being awarded to EMBT/RMJM (Scotland) Ltd, a Spanish-Scottish joint venture design company set up specifically for the project. The two practices found the two different cultures and ways of working difficult to adapt to, especially since they were also working from two different locations and communicating mainly via fax. In 1998, Bill Armstrong, Project Manager to the project, resigned from his position due to not receiving the support necessary to enable him to carry out his job and heavily criticising Miralles saying ‘a stand must be taken to either bring Miralles to heel or to accept his inadequacies. He does not believe he has any. The programme will drift, the cost will increase, the design team will make claims, the contractors will make claims and the project will become a disaster. Project communication was also hindered by the multi-headed client comprising of the SPCB, the presiding officer and an architectura l advisor. The project was also further complicated by the deaths of the architect Miralles in July 2000 and Donald Dewar, first minister in October of the same year. Procurement path The decision to procure the building under Construction Management is said to be ‘one of the most significant, if not the most significant decision taken during the course of the project. The choice of procurement was chosen rather than under a Private Finance Initiative for its speed in construction by overlapping design, tendering and construction. The Holyrood Inquiry criticises that the choice of procurement was not properly identified or evaluated, describing it as ‘beggars belief that ministers were not ask to approve the proposal to adopt construction management. The Scottish office publicly declared that they would be working to a fixed budget and where highly ‘risk adverse, yet they followed a procurement path which had no fixed budget and also a route where a high degree of risk lies with the client. In an attempt to achieve early completion the management contractor produced an optimistic programme from which the flow of design information was destined to fail to meet expectations. As such, construction cannot proceed in accordance with the programme and cost entailed. While some failures have been attributed to the architect arising from co-ordination and communication in differences between Edinburgh and Barcelona the client should have been made aware that high quality design work takes time and that the programme was un realistic given the complex nature of the design. The appointment of the Construction Manager Although initially rejected on tender price, Bovis were readmitted to the selection on the basis of past performance on the Museum of Scotland. On finalising the contract the Scottish Office left themselves open to large construction fees if the project over ran by not processing Bovis agreement in regard to their fee. Bovis proposed a Construction Management Fee of 1.25% to be converted to a lump sum on agreement of the Project Cost Plan. A formal letter of intent was issuedby the Scottish Office of their intention to enter into a contract with Bovis on 19th January with the formal legal Memorandum of Agreement not being signed until October of the same year. Although Schedule 1(J) confirmed a fee of 1.25% it failed to make provision for conversion of that fee to a lump sum on agreement of the cost plan. Had a lump sum value been stipulated, it would have have acted as a powerful incentive for Bovis to complete the project on time .  The Auditor General in his 2000 report makes the point that a tapering percentage scheme could have been implemented in that the percentage fee would reduce as a proportion of construction cost as that cost increases, although Lord Frasier also makes the valid point that this would not have been as significant as the possible conversion to a lump sum upon agreement of the cost plan. As demonstrated above the project was a catalogue of errors resulting from a number of decisions at a relatively early stage of the project that were ‘fundamentally wrong or wholly misleading and it was those decisions that caused massive increases in cost and delays. The next section in this report looks at to what extent the project manager be held accountable. The role of the Project Management Brief After the identification of the requirements of a new parliament building by civil servants in June 1997, a project manager was engaged for the specific task of developing a brief for a parliament building. The project brief is a comprehensive statement of the requirements of the project which enables construction professionals to understand the scope and extent of the project and quality requirements. The outcome of any project relies on the quality of the briefing provided. The project brief in this instance had many failings, proved by the fact that it was necessary to increase areas due to under estimating the actual requirements of the parliament and its end users. The Auditor General was complementary about the user brief in that it presented a ‘clear vision of the requirements of the new parliament, however it failed to address the potential conflict between cost, time and quality. More time should have been spent developing the brief at an early stage taking into account risk and requirements which would have reduced the likelihood of changes later which could have direct cost implications and knock-on effects with regard to programme. Communication The relationship between the project manager and architect and also the project managers relationship with his employer is vital. From reports submitted to the Holyrood inquiry it is concluded that the project manager did not succeed in developing constructive dialogue with the architect. Indeed from the time of the architects appointment the project manager had reservations and serious misgivings about the appointment and subsequently resigned in 1998. Although the project manager had been praised on an earlier project Victoria Quay, for his commitment, organisation, single mindedness and attention to systems and detail which had served the project well, these qualities which carried with them rigidity and inflexibility were not enough to develop and sustain a productive relationship with the EMBT/RMJM design team. Again this recurring theme was echoed in late 2000 when the Project Director also commented that he found it difficult to develop a constructive relationship with the architect. Procurement Choice- Construction management The Holyrood Inquiry notes that while the timetable was developed by the project manager ‘using his considerable experience of project management the tight deadline was undoubtedly driven both by the political objective of an early completion and the occupancy of the parliament building. While the programme may have been a given factor which dictated a ‘fast track construction method, greater investigations and evaluation should have taken place to appropriate the best procurement path. Construction management is a procurement option for high quality, potentially high cost projects if the client is fully engaged and has a clear goal. The Holyrood inquiry however found that the project managers were not fully engaged and failed to appreciate cost downsides and risks involved with managing 60 contractors according to an everlasting brief. The project manager should have given better understanding and advice to both the client and non construction professionals involved in the project about the significantly higher client risk and cost uncertainty that both construction management and management contracting entail over traditional procurement methods. Risk could have been passed to the contractor under another route. Although tender prices are likely to have been higher there would have been a greater degree of cost certainty. Sir Michael Lathem believes that full partnering should have been used to share the risk between client and contractor. The conceptional design work could have been complete by Miralles than novated to a major design and build contractor to work out construction drawings as part of the construction team. The client could have had proper cost control while bringing in value management at an early stage to design out things that adds cost but no value. Prime contracting could possible have been another option. Although still evolving in the late 1990s it benefits from joined up team from inception with the supply chain on board. Project Execution Plan There was a failing by project management to finalise the draft Project Execution Plan, as highlighted in the Auditor Generals September 2000. The Project Execution Plan is a key document governing the project with fundamentals such as project strategy, organisation, control procedures and responsibilities. The HM Treasury describes this document as ‘a live management document, regularly updated to be used by all parties both as a means to communication and as a control and performance measurement tool. The Auditor Generals main findings in his 2000 report highlights there should have been change control procedures based on a detailed cost plan agreed between all parties at an early stage. Cost reporting was also deficient in a number of areas, such as an absence of an arrangement requiring project management to provide full cost information on regular and systematic basis and also in a departure from good practice in the failure to identify and quantify a separate allowance for the major risks potentially affecting the project. Strategic and Operations Management For project management to be effective, it must incorporate both strategic management and operational project management techniques. Strategic management planning at its simplest produces both primary goals for operational plans and also the framework within which they can be realised. Cole (1997) describes strategic management as being much about vision and direction as about mechanisms and structures. At strategic level, project management is concerned with the provision of the organisational and integration structures while at operational level, project management is concerned with how particular processes common to all projects should be executed and controlled. With the application of a clearly defined Body of Knowledge, project objectives can be appropriately defined and objectives successfully delivered. When looking at the Scottish Parliament project there are a number of strategic and operational management actions that could have been undertaken to better control the project and increase its chance for successful delivery against time and cost targets.. Project Organisation Burke (2005) comments that projects are performed by people and managed through people. Therefore it is essential to develop an organisation structure which reflects the needs of the project (task) and the needs of the project team, just as importantly as the needs of the individuals. Central figures within the Holyrood project organisation were the project owner, the project manager and the project sponsor. The project owner sat within a steering group of senior civil servants who took strategic decisions on behalf of the client. The project manager was responsible for the day to day management of the project and reported directly to the project sponsor and acted as the interface between project sponsor and the supply chain. It is the project sponsors role to act as the clients representative and act in the clients interest in the project. In the case of the Holyrood project the project sponsor was not familiar with construction or sponsorship of major construction projects. On a project of such complexity and playing such an important link within the organisation structure the project sponsor should have had sufficient knowledge of both. In my opinion this ultimately had a impact on both the projects successful delivery against time and cost. Decision making mechanisms of the project structure were criticised during Lord Frasiers summary of the Holyrood inquiry. Frasier recommended that where independent advisors are retained, their views should not be filtered by civil servants but put to ministers alongside any disagreement officials may have with the judgements expressed by those advisors. Ministers did not have any formal indication of the apparent threat to the agreed budget of  £50 million during late 1998 and early 1999 when officials were aware of the ‘evolving situation. Forecasting the future, Scenario Planning Cole (1997) describes forecasting in a strategic context as referring to ‘any attempt whether qualitative or quantitative and usually based on past performance, to predict future outcomes and trends in the internal and external environments of an organisation in order to limit the risks involved in devising and implementing strategy Forecasting at an operational level may be focused on the next few months to a year and need a considerable level of exactness, whereas on a strategic level a reasonable level of predicted trends is required in the longer term often on the basis of a 3 or 5 year plan. There is a number of techniques that can be used when forecasting the future such as such as Delphi technique, brain storming and scenario development. Scenario planning, essentially provide a framework for formulating strategy under conditions of uncertainty. Porter (1985) comments that when combined with ‘substantive conceptual tools for understanding industry structure, competitive behaviour, and competitive advantage, the scenario tool can be an important part of the strategists arsenal. The most important difference between rational approaches to strategic planning and scenario planning is that the past is not always representative of the future as continuity cannot be assumed. By challenging assumptions and questioning things that we sometimes take for granted, the Holyrood project team could have been provided with the flexibility it needed to cope with the uncertain times ahead such as the death of the architect and factors such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States of America which has been suggested had a direct effect to the increase in security requirements including bomb proof cladding at Holyrood. Conclusion Although the choice of construction management was heavily criticised in Lord Frasers report many of the decisions that contributed to the massive costs and delays attached to the project were made at a relatively early stage due to the project not being managed properly. With an unrealistic estimated budget and programme the project was destined to fail from the outset. It would be unfair to compare the end cost figure to the original  £49 million cited in the white paper because as previously discussed this was not an accurate figure. Had these estimates derived from final designs and contingencies for the variations then a more realistic comparison for the end cost versus the estimated cost could have been made. It would be fair to say that during the project there were a number of unforeseen circumstances that were unavaioidable which had an effect on both time and cost of the build, notable the deaths of Miralles and Dewar in 2000 and the existence of a multi-headed client (consisting of the Scottish Parliament Corporate Body, the Presiding Officer, and an architectural advisor), who took over the project from the Scottish Executive (formerly the Scottish Office) while it was already under construction. Although events like these cannot be predicted they can be properly managed if the correct contingency measures are in place to effectively manage the risk. It seems that project management can be successfully implemented as seen in other industries such as aerospace and manufacturing, however as both the Latham and Eagn reports outline, the construction industry is behind in terms of performance improvements. In order to be successful project management must implement management at both strategic and operational level. If systems and tools that are used at an operational level to implement project management are not used in conjunction with corresponding integration and organisational aspects of strategic management, then problems are bound to occur. 6.0  Ã‚  Ã‚   References Books Burke, R (2003) Project Management, Planning and Control Techniques. The Scarlet Letter Essay -- Literary Analysis, Nathaniel Hawthorne

The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a cult classic. And with good reason. Anyone who simply believes that the title of this book just signifies that the protagonist wears a scarlet â€Å"A† on her dress in punishment of her adultery is ignorant. Obviously this paper would not be required if such were true. Instead, The Scarlet Letter is extremely ambiguous. One can argue that the scarlet letter is a character itself. I intend to flesh this out in literary, historic, and symbolic terms. What is The Scarlet Letter really about? â€Å"It has all the ingredients of a soap opera, but it is far more than that,† (Johnson 1995) writes Claudia Durst Johnson in her book which analyzes The Scarlet Letter thoroughly. Rather it is about the consequences of breaking the moral code, or in this case a moral law. It is about failing to be true to human nature. It is about cruel and terrible revenge. It is about the hypocrisy of members of a community who refuse to acknowledge that each of them is just as human, just as vulnerable to passionate feelings as the women they label an adulterer. I could go on and on. The Scarlet Letter’s psychological aspects seem never-ending. The letter is a symbol. While it has many implied meanings, it also has literal meanings. The first and most obvious of the latter is that Hester’s â€Å"A† stands for adultery and , as the narrator puts it, â€Å"women’s frailty and sinful passion† (83). But the â€Å"A† on her breast begins to represent different things as the story unfolds. For example, some people begin to think the â€Å"A† stands for able when she helps out the community. â€Å"In the course of the novel, the â€Å"A† seems to encompass the entire range of human beingness, from the earthly and passionate adulteress to the pure and... ...in America during the seventeenth century. He wanted his readers to develop their own interpretation of how America has changed. A number, except for certain exceptions, usually does not mean anything other than its value. Thus, it was ruled out. Why is it The Scarlet Letter? Why not The Scarlet A? A title is much more effective when it is more general. At the end of the day, authors write books to make money. The Scarlet A is a confusing, as well as less appealing, title that would have sold much less. The title is better off being general, and then allowing the book to be more specific. What is more memorable? â€Å"The Scarlet Letter† or â€Å"The Scarlet A: Adultery in the 1600’s?† The Scarlet Letter was titled the way it was for a reason. It symbolizes and appeals to every major theme in the book, while making it obvious on first glance what the book centralizes on.

Lev semenovich vygotsky, two types of psychological development

Lev Semenovich Vygotsky was a developmental Psychologist. He lived a short life during turbulent, radical times. Lev Vygotsky was born on the 17th November 1896 in Orsha, a metropolis in the Western part of the Russian Empire in a Judaic household. He died 37 old ages subsequently from TB in Stalinist, Russia. Vygotsky was a Lawyer based on his University instruction and a school instructor by business. Although his involvements were rather diverse his Hagiographas frequently centred on subjects of kid development and instruction. Some of the major theories developed by Lev Vygotsky include ; Socio-cultural Theory – Vygotsky proposed there were two types of psychological development ; â€Å" natural † consisting of biological growing, physical and cognitive development ; and â€Å" cultural † , dwelling of larning to utilize psychological and cultural tools, including marks, symbols and linguistic communication. Vygotsky believed that a kid ‘s development is a consequence of his/her civilization. He thought that development applied ab initio to the psychological procedure, for illustration, linguistic communication accomplishments, the manner of thought and other mental maps. Vygotsky believed the above is accomplishable through interacting socially with others, the parents being of peculiar influence to the kid along-side knowing others. Interaction with others enables a kid to larn the life style of his/her civilization. These wonts being things such as address forms, the written linguistic communication and other constructed cognition. Both n atural and cultural operation act jointly to simplify the development procedure. Vygotskys socio-cultural theory suggests that societal interaction leads to uninterrupted bit-by-bit alterations in a kid ‘s idea and behavior that can change greatly from civilization to civilization ( Woolfolk, 1998 ) . Basically, Vygotskys theory implies that development depends on a kid ‘s interaction with others and the tools that civilization provides to assist them organize their ain position of the universe. His theory combines the societal environment and knowledge. Children will get the ways of thought and behaving by interacting with a more knowing other. Vygotsky believed that every map in the kid ‘s cultural development appears twice, foremost on the societal degree and subsequently, on the single degree, foremost between people ( inter-psychological ) and so inside the kid ( intra-psychological ) Vygotsky, 1978. The socio-cultural theory consists of several elements to as sist implement it ( see below left ) . Language and the thoughts that are expressed by agencies of linguistic communication play a cardinal function in mental development.image Zone of Proximal development – Harmonizing to Vygotsky kids learn by following the beliefs, values, and attitudes of others, either consciously or unconsciously as a consequence of interacting with them. Vygotsky argues that the Zone of Proximal Development ( ZPD ) is the difference between a kid ‘s bing abilities and what s/he can larn under counsel from a knowing other. Therefore the Proximal Zone is the difference between what kids are already able to make and what they are non rather ready to carry through by themselves. Harmonizing to Vygotsky, a knowing other must assist direct and organize a kid ‘s acquisition before the kid can understand and follow it. In order for the ZPD to be a success, it must incorporate two characteristics, the first of which is called subjectiveness. This term implies that the knowing other must hold a common apprehension of what they are making with the kid, in-other-words both parties must hold a shared end. The kid uses the exper tness of the knowing other ( adept ) in the acquisition procedure. To get down the expert takes duty, so as the kid ( novice ) learns, the expert transportations rational duty to the novitiate. This is non immediate but a gradual procedure for illustration, when an expert teaches a kid how to swim, the expert first supports the kid in the H2O and so Lashkar-e-Taibas go bit by bit, there-by switching duty to the kid. The ZPD uses two degrees to find a kid ‘s ability and potency. A kid ‘s â€Å" existent development degree † is what s/he can accomplish unaided without aid. This sets the footing for a kid ‘s cognition and is what is traditionally assessed and valued in schools. The â€Å" possible development degree † is the degree of proficiency a kid can make when s/he is guided and supported by another individual. Social interaction helps a kid to retrieve and may even keep the cardinal to memory development. The construct of a important other steerin g a kid through the ZPD is known as guided engagement /scaffolding.Graph: Zone of proximal development: Vygotsky Guided Participation/Scaffolding – Harmonizing to Vygotsky staging is the procedure used by a knowing other to teach or steer a kid through hard jobs, in order to cultivate hypertext transfer protocol: //www.tascwheel.com/files/research/article-01/figure3.jpg her/his potency. Scaffolding makes it easy for a kid to construct on the cognition they already have and helps them follow new thoughts and attitudes. Any direction given by the knowing other must be directed towards the hereafter and non the yesteryear. Guidance can be given in legion different ways, by a knowing other, by cultural experiences or objects or by a kid ‘s old acquisition. Vygotsky assumed that a kid ‘s development is a consequence of his/her civilization. He thought that development applied chiefly to the psychological procedure, for illustration, usage of linguistic communication accomplishments, the logical thinking procedure and other mental maps. Vygotsky thought that the above is achieved through interacting with others, parents being peculiarly influential to the kid ‘s development along-side knowing others. Interaction with others enables a kid to larn the manner of life of his/her civilization, that is to state address forms, the written lingu istic communication and other constructed cognition. Vygotsky believed that societal interaction helps kids to retrieve and may even keep the cardinal to memory building. As illustrated in the image above, the scaffolding rule plants on the footing that the knowing other asks the kid unfastened ended, near ended inquiries and gives bit-by-bit instructions ever structuring the acquisition procedure. Encouragement and congratulations are offered at every chance, while each point is reinforced through presentation, repeat and the usage of psychological tools. This procedure helps the kid construct on their cognition. Psychological tools can be in the signifier of â€Å" symbolic objects † such as, marks, relevant texts, expression, graphs, important devices and today it besides includes electronic signifiers of information entree ( computers/internet ) .Internalization and LanguageAnother of import part made by Vygotsky connects the development of relationships between linguisti c communication and idea. This construct is farther explained in his book Thought and Language. It looks at the connexion between address ( soundless inner address and unwritten linguistic communication look ) and the development of mental perceptual experience and consciousness of one ‘s thought procedure. Vygotsky argues that it is through the above that a kid ‘s ideas and mental concepts are formed. Language development is formed in the undermentioned four phases ; Crude Stage – At this phase a kid has n't mastered the art of address s/he merely babblings. The sounds that s/he makes do n't hold any existent significance or intent. The kid is merely experimenting with their new found accomplishment. This action does non intend that a kid does non believe it merely suggests that s/he has non learned to internalize her/his address. Naive Stage – When a kid foremost learns to talk s/he may state certain words before s/he has a comprehensive apprehension of their significance and map. A kid merely understands that when a word is said in a certain manner others understand the significance. In other words understanding of a word comes before the kid really learns the full significance and intent of that word and is able to set it in any peculiar order. External Stage – In this phase the kid begins to utilize peripheral objects such as, flash cards, or fingers for numbering. This is besides the beginning of the egoistic address. The kid will speak to herself during drama with others or when there is no 1 else about. This action is the kid ‘s verbalization of ideas. In-growth Stage – In this phase the kid ‘s egoistic address turns inwards. S/he enters the concluding phase of linguistic communication development and with these new found abilities the kid is able to execute logical undertakings internally. Rather than numbering aloud s/he will number in her/his caput utilizing portion of her/his short term memory. Vygotsky believed that the more a kid uses internalised idea and logic, the better a kid can execute.Major Contributions to EducationVygotsky has made many of import parts to the instruction system and instruction, he has become to some extent a powerful figure in instruction, school psychological science and particular instruction, respected all over the universe. Many instructors and parents even before Vygotskys clip noticed an obvious connexion between support from a knowing other and the advancement a kid is able to do utilizing that support. Vygotskys ZPD helped determine options to standardized testing in schools. Vyg otsky founded what is known as â€Å" dynamic appraisal † . Dynamic assessment accent potency instead than present accomplishment and measures the acquisition procedure straight. Traditional trials merely measure the kid ‘s current abilities based on past acquisition and non the kid ‘s possible. Harmonizing to Vygotsky dynamic appraisal leads a kid to accomplish success through joint shared activity ( Lidz, 1995 ) . The ZPD has direct bearing on readying in school instruction, it enables a instructor to take methods bespoke for peculiar pupils. Vygotsky believed that the schoolroom is a society consisting of a community of scholars with assorted ability, expert/novice working together. He viewed the instructor as an teacher, steering and interacting with pupils. Through the procedure of scaffolding the instructor is able to supply support to the pupils. Through the effectual usage of linguistic communication in the staging procedure the instructor is able to negoc iate with the kid. Vygotskys theory encourages coaction in the schoolroom. The instructor has to supply sufficient support until the pupil is able to travel through all set undertakings independently.Vygotskys 4 Principles Applied in ClassroomsHypertext transfer protocol: //viking.coe.uh.edu/~ichen/ebooklet/et-it/4vygo.htm Learning and development is a societal collaborative activity – This suggests that interaction between grownups and other kids is critical. The usage of engineering to heighten communicating, contact and interaction would be good in the schoolroom. Programmes that support combined job resolution and synergistic determination doing enrich the acquisition environment. The ZPD can function as a usher for curricular and lesson be aftering – Appropriate support by the instructor can help the acquisition procedure. Thoughtful counsel and productive treatment with the debut of psychological tools such as, encyclopaedias on CD-ROM, package such as, grammar draughtss and encephalon storming package would all assist the kid develop understanding and cognition. School acquisition should happen in a meaningful context – We learn things in relation to what else we already know and believe. Learning is an active societal procedure. It is non possible to absorb new cognition without some kind of old cognition to construct upon. The more we know the more we learn. Therefore a instructor must link what is to be learned with the pupil ‘s old cognition. Relate out-of-school experience to the kid ‘s school experience – The linguistic communication we use influences larning. It is of import for a instructor to organize school larning around the civilization the kid knows and understands for illustration, a category of pupils analyzing history could utilize a multimedia presentation to bring forth a undertaking about the history of their town. Vygotsky has made valuable parts in determining learning methods within particular instruction. He insisted that instructors should make a acquisition environment which would provide handicapped pupils with alternate agencies of communicating and development and those psychological tools should be used by instructors that are most suitable to counterbalance for a pupil ‘s peculiar disablement. He argued that a kid ‘s societal eviction is the chief factor responsible for its flawed development. Vygotsky states that although sightlessness may be a biological defect, a instructor must non cover with the biological factor entirely but besides look at the societal effects faced by the kid as a consequence of its sightlessness. He promoted the thought that handicapped kids should be included in the social/cultural life of their communities as this would rush effectual rehabilitation. Some Restrictions to Vygotskys TheoryVygotsky stresses the importance of civilization and lingui stic communication in understanding. However there is limited research that determines whether grownup, kid and equal coactions differ in their value ( Miller 2002 ) . There is besides the inquiry on how much aid the knowing other should give the kid and whether excessively much coaction could take to regression instead than assist a pupil evolve ( Miller 2002 ) . Vygotskys theory is frequently compared to Jean Piaget, who believed that cognitive competency should non be looked at until a kid reached the appropriate development phase. Piaget believed that the most of import beginning of cogitation is the kid itself. It is frequently said that Vygotsky was in front of his times. His theory was formed over 50 old ages ago and his had such a profound consequence on our instruction system. Even today, instruction psychologists are still researching his theory, which could go an of import instrument to alter, regenerate our present instruction system.

Spanish Verbs Comprender vs. Entender

Spanish Verbs Comprender vs. Entender Both comprender and entender are usually translated as to understand, and in many cases - in fact, most of the time - you can use them interchangeably. However, there are some subtle differences in how they may come across. Differences Between Entender and Comprender The main difference between the two verbs when they mean to understand can be seen in the saying Te entiendo, pero no te comprendo, which obviously makes little sense if you try translating it as I understand you, but I dont understand you. Perhaps a better way of understanding this sentence would be something like I understand the words youre saying but I dont understand what you mean. Comprender, then, can suggest a deeper type of understanding. If you speak with an accent and want to know if youre getting your words across, for example, you might ask:  ¿Me entiendes? But if what youre looking for is whether the listener understands the implications of what youre saying, the question  ¿Me comprendes? may be more appropriate. In real life, though, these differences may not be all that distinct, and you may hear one verb used when the above guidelines suggest using the other. For example, I know exactly what you mean could be translated as either Te comprendo perfectamente or Te entiendo perfectamente (the latter appears to be more common) and the same goes for Nadie me comprende and Nadie me entiende for Nobody understands me. In other words, as a Spanish student you neednt worry too much about which verb to use in most contexts. As you hear and use the two verbs, youll pick up on whatever subtle differences exist between them in your locality. Note that comprender can also have the meanings to cover, to enclose or to include (and thus have a meaning related to the English word comprehensive rather than to comprehend, both of which come from the same Latin source). Example: El territorio de la provincia comprende tres regiones bien diferenciadas. (The provincial territory includes three distinctive regions.)  Entiende cannot be substituted in this sentence. Sample Sentences Using Entender and Comprender Here are examples of these two verbs in use: Si yo quiero comprender a alguien, no puedo condenarlo; debo observarlo, estudiarlo. (If I want to understand someone, I cant judge him; I need to observe him, study him.)Todavà a no puedo entender de lo que se me acusa. (I still cant understand what Im being accused of.)Mis padres comprendà an que esta era mi personalidad y no trataron de cambiar mi modo de ser. (My parents understood that that was my personality and didnt try to change how I was.)Si hubiera entendido el frà o que iba a sentir, no me hubiera depilado. (If I had understood how cold it would feel, I wouldnt have shaved.)Comprendemos perfectamente las dificultades y errores que se cometen en una lucha tan larga. (We understand perfectly the difficulties and mistakes that are made in such a grand struggle.)La pelà cula la entendà a medias; hay ciertas cosas que se escapaban a mi comprensià ³n. (I didnt completely understand the movie; there are certain things that eluded my understanding.)Solo los sabios lo comprendern. (Only the wise will understand it.) Creo que son pocas las personas que lo entienden como realmente es. (I believe that few are the people who understand it as it really is.) Using Entender With Prefixes Entender, although not comprender, can be combined with prefixes to form several other verbs, although none are in widespread use. Malentender can be used for to misunderstand, although both entender mal and misinterpretar are more common. Malentendà algo y me ayudaste a entenderlo. (I misunderstood something and you helped me to understand it.)Es una broma que muchos malentendieron. (It is a joke that many misunderstood.) Desentenderse can be used to refer to the avoiding of understanding, intentionally or otherwise. Poco a poco me desentendà de las partituras y empecà © a improvisar. (Little by little I ignored the sheet music and began to improvise.)Nuestros là deres se desentienden del nuevo escndalo econà ³mico. (Our leaders are looking the other way from the new economic scandal.) Sobrentender (sometimes spelled sobreentender) refers to complete understanding. Sobrentiendo que no soy adicto y que no he substituido una droga por otra. Criminal Justice Research Methodology Term Paper - 2

Criminal Justice Research Methodology - Term Paper Example Potential demerits while using secondary data must also be kept in mind. The fundamental issue calls for the persistent problem of validity. When one re searcher gathers data for one specific pur pose, it cannot be assured that those data will be suitable for other research work as well. Generally, secondary data are to the lowest degree helpful for assessment studies. This is because valuations are contrived to serve specific questions about specific plans. It is always probable to reanalyze data from valuation studies, but secondary data cannot be used to assess a completely different program (Maxfield, 2008). Secondary researchers (like Maxwell, Garner, and Fagan, 2001) liked to affirm or re-evaluate determinations from the pilot studies. But it is not likely to use those data to an swer inquiries about domestic ferocity inter ventions other than take into custody or to assess arrest policies in new metropolises where the tries out did not take place. Racial profiling is nothing but police officers using the race or ethnicity of a person to initiate contact. This is the racial profiling in its simplest form. According to Harris (2002) racial profiling is a key disagreement in the relationship between the police and the community in recent years. Thus ethnic identification is consequently, the exercise of police officers to stop drivers only due to their race or ethnicity and not for any genuine law infringement. Whether certain racial or ethnic people are targeted for investigation or for traffic stops? In reality this query had gained national interest during the late 1990s. Racial profiling is now an extremely mooted issue because several cities were alleging and complaining that the police officers were paying closer notice to minority group members when conducting traffic stops or carrying on investigatory stops. The racial profiling debate calls for very intricate matters associated with finding out

Global Warming effects human health Research Paper

Global Warming effects human health - Research Paper Example The research paper â€Å"Global Warming effects human health† describes various deteriorating health threats one is going to experience during his lifespans due to the reduced air quality and dreadful conditions of food and water to growing amounts of allergens and disastrous weather events. At present there is general unanimity that the Earth is warming at a faster level than the previous century’s where hunter-gatherer human existence. The previous decade was the warmest from the time when instrumental archives initiated in the nineteenth century. The reasons of this change are more and more well assumed that there is fresh and sturdier proof that most of the warming witnessed over the last fifty years is possibly ascribed by human actions, primarily the release of greenhouse gases produced from fossil fuels. Anxieties on the typical weather system are already producing effects on Earth’s surface. These comprise not only mounting surface temperatures, however, as well more and more recurrent floods and droughts, and variations in normal ecologies, for example earlier flowering of vegetation, and pole ward movements in the dispersal of numerous species. Such vicissitudes are intimately related to human health. Weather conditions disturb human health, through the bodily effects of weather excesses, and secondarily, through effects on the levels of contamination in the air, on the farming, marine and freshwater schemes that offer food and water, and pathogens that result in communicable ailments. This paper mainly explains health impacts of global warming, climate change, deforestation, global warming, greenhouse effect, and greenhouse gases (McMichael). Global Warming Global warming is well documented by researchers all over the globe as a crucial community health and ecological anxiety. Mainly because of the use of fossil fuels, bigger levels of greenhouse gases in the air are resulting in greater global temperatures that cause adverse eco logical, air quality and human health concerns. The report on climate change by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2007, global temperatures have increased by 1.3?F over the previous century and are expected to rise between 2? and 11.5?F by 2100, Global warming has been perceived to reduce air quality, escalating sea levels, melting glaciers, dangerous hurricanes, more strong and extended droughts, more recurrent heat waves, forest fires and other threats to human health. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) stated that greenhouse gases cause air contamination and threaten the civic health and well-being of present and upcoming generations. California’s civic health toll due to air pollution is currently very high, and upshots in billions of dollars in healthcare costs each year as of early deaths and remedial mediations (see table-1for statistics). The California Air Resources Board (CARB) evaluations that revelation to harmful leve ls of Particulate matter and ozone adds to huge number of early deaths, asthma attacks, and admittance to hospitals and lots of lost school and work days from breathing and cardiac diseases each year. Particulate matter estimates for the major early demises linked with air contamination, even though ozone adds to hundreds of early deaths each year in California. Contact to great levels of air contaminants, as well as particle pollution, besides has been made known to lessen lung development and function in children, causing in weak lungs (Children’

Should the US build more nuclear power plants for an energy source Essay

Should the US build more nuclear power plants for an energy source - Essay Example Furthermore, safe ways for the disposal of nuclear waste should be devised so that no harm can be brought to people who come into contact with it and to the environment. Since the construction of more nuclear power plants depends on the goodwill of all the political groups involved, then it is advisable for all these parties to come to a consensus on how to best deal with the issue (Sains, 2001). The nuclear plants should be constructed and while this is being done, all the safety concerns of those who are skeptical about it should be addressed to ensure that all the parties are working together to create a safe and efficient source of energy. There are many advantages for the use of nuclear energy in the United States and these may be political, economic, and environmental among others. There are many economic benefits for the construction of nuclear power plants in the United States as a source of energy. One of these benefits is that very small amounts of raw materials are require d for the production of a large amount of nuclear energy (Cavallaro, 2010). Moreover, since these raw materials are required in such small quantities, they can be easily transported from one place to another even globally. The operation of nuclear power stations at their full capacity will ensure that cheap electricity is available in the market and that more people will be able to afford it. Nuclear power is a reliable source of energy because the average lifespan of a nuclear reactor is forty years and this lifespan can be extended by another twenty years (Weeks, 2006). Although the initial cost of constructing a nuclear plant is high, the cost of running it afterwards is relatively low and this makes it a very good investment. Nuclear power is very environmentally friendly because no harmful emissions are released into the environment during the process of producing energy, as compared to other sources of energy such as fossil fuels. Nuclear plants require very little space to co nstruct and because of this it has very little impact on the environment. It can be used to produce large amounts of energy at very little environmental cost compared to other sources of energy because nothing needs to be burned in order to produce energy (Clemmitt, 2010). Throughout the nuclear fuel cycle, all the byproducts produced are accounted for and it is carefully stored to ensure that there are no adverse impacts on the environment. It has been said of nuclear energy that since the beginning of the industrial revolution, it is the only industry which has managed to account for all of its waste that has a potential to harm the environment. The use of nuclear energy may also have a political impact on the United States especially at the international level. In the recent decades, the United States has, on numerous occasions, had to go to war in other countries to secure its energy interests. A very good example of this has been the First and the Second Gulf Wars whose main pu rpose was to secure the supply of oil. The use of nuclear energy would greatly reduce the dependence of the United States on foreign sources of energy because it would have more than enough for its domestic needs and it would even be able to export some of the surplus electricity to neighboring countries. Furthermore,
