Over time, man increased his knowledge and skills, which eventually led to a scientific era that has seen the discovery and invention of different equipment. It is these discoveries that have resulted to both improvement and destruction of life on earth. Genetically modified organisms, commonly abbreviated as GMO, is a discovery that was established in the 1980s and has become more pronounced with time (Carter, Moschini, and Sheldon, 2011). Indeed, there are many scientific discoveries in the world and genetically modified organisms are among the most vital of them all. It all commenced when scientists discovered that the DNA is responsible for storage of hereditary information in organisms. Soon after, it was clear that t he information could be adjusted prior to its transfer from one generation to the other. Biotechnology came to play as it provided a means of making adjustments in the structure and functionality of the DNA. Stefan Dimitrov (2003) deduces that the genetic alterations were aimed at improving the quality and performance of organisms. It is with this mentality that genetic scientists forged a way of making improvements in natural organisms. Plants were to produce healthier fruits and food yields at a quicker rate than they used to while animals were to give birth to stronger breeds. In addition, some plants and animals were expected to develop higher resilience to hostile conditions, which was meant to increase their survival rate (Carter, Moschini and Sheldon, 2011). The success of modifying the genetic setup of organisms has been tremendous with time because of increased research and high-tech tools. As time passes, man has successfully altered the genetic makeup of various plants a nd animals. Scientists have also achieved high performing organisms that provide increased nutrients and stronger breeds in new generations. James Geiger (2009) informs that scientists have produced different plants that have yields with increased nutrients, for example, tomatoes, capsicums and oranges. Other successes have been witnessed in the veterinary world where different domestic animals have been improved to hybrid statuses using genetic modification methods. Advancements in the world of biotechnology have made it possible to increase successful alterations as it is not an easy process to achieve (Carter, Moschini and Sheldon, 2011). The products have also penetrated the market where many are sold in groceries and supermarkets. In turn, such a display shows the success genetic modifiers have achieved over the years to the extent of convincing food regulators of the safety and benefits of their products (Geiger, 2009). Genetic modification is a journey that has been with man y hindrances from various sources. Many are people who view the modified products as full of unhealthy chemicals among other substances. As such, they feel they are inedible as upon consumption can cause diseases, for instance, cancer. This is not the case as scientists have proven the nonexistence of harmful compounds in the products by displaying the ingredients in the modified organisms (Dimitrov, 2003). It is a tedious task to convince people of the benefits of genetically modified organisms, but many stores have given them the options by separating them from natural products and labeling them as GMOs (Carter, Moschini and Sheldon, 2011).
